The Icelandic school year runs from ~20 August to 10 June and consists of 180 mandatory teaching days plus teacher prep days (collective agreement of the Icelandic Teachers’ Union). Each municipality sets its own school calendar within the framework agreed by the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities + the Teachers’ Union. Reykjavík is used as the reference here — most municipalities align Easter and Christmas breaks (due to helgidagafriður), but winter breaks may differ by 1-2 weeks.
Short winter breaks happen twice a year — in autumn (around First Day of Winter, Sat 24 Oct 2026) and in spring (around Bun Day-Bursting Day-Ash Wednesday in February). Easter break is contiguous (Mon before Maundy Thursday — Easter Monday), usually 8-10 days. Summer break starts after 10 June and ends around 22 August (~10 weeks). Check your own municipality’s school calendar for exact dates — Akureyri and Hafnarfjörður may differ from Reykjavík.
